Jim Shead's Waterways Information

An encyclopedia of the canals and rivers of England and Wales, including historical data, provided by Jim Shead, writer and photographer. Includes over 650 links to other boating sites.

Waterscape Waterscape.com

Waterscape.com is a BW subsidiary that gives online information about pubs and restaurants, visitor attractions, local history and wildlife, plus route planners for boaters, walkers and cyclists, amongst other things.

Inland Waterways Association

The national voluntary organisation that campaigns on behalf of all waterways users for the conservation, use, maintenance, restoration and development of the inland waterways.

National Association of Boat Owners

NABO (formed in 1991) represents the interests of all who own boats on Britain's rivers and canals, focusing on such issues as licensing, moorings, boat safety certification, and dredging. Membership now exceeds 3,000.

The Falkirk Wheel Falkirk Wheel

The Falkirk Wheel is a fantastic feat of modern engineering. Opened in 2002 to reconnect the Forth & Clyde Canal to the Edinburgh & Glasgow Union Canal, it is the only rotating boat lift in the world.

The Millenium Link

The Gentles Family website: A rich source of information on the restoration and the linking of the Forth & Clyde to the Union Canal in Scotland, including construction and operation of the Falkirk Wheel.

NarrowboatWorld

A site whose aim is to promote the waterways. It tells what is happening in the world of narrowboating and claims to be the most visited waterways site on the web.

Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway Trust

The Trust's vision is to build by 2010 a 20-mile waterway from Milton Keynes to Bedford. The waterway will inspire the development of new housing, leisure facilities, and commercial projects along its route.

The Anderton Boat Lift Anderton Boat Lift

Located near Northwich in Cheshire, the Anderton Boat Lift is a tribute to Britain's canal engineers. Built in 1875 and recently restored, it was a 'world first' and is currently the only boat lift in England.

Canalworld

A forum for discussing any issue about boating on the UK inland waterways. Membership is free and members can browse the discussion boards, submit their pictures to the photo gallery, and discuss issues of common concern.

The Waterways Trust The Waterways Trust

Mikron Theatre Company Mikron Theatre Company

The Mikron Theatre Company is a touring theatre group specialising in canal and waterway themes. The group of four professional actors lives and travels on board nb Tyseley, performing at canal and riverside venues around the UK.

Boat Safety Scheme Boat Safety Scheme

The BSS was jointly established in 1997 by the Environment Agency and British Waterways to promote safety on the inland waterways in respect of boats, their installations and components.

Waterway Recovery Group

The Waterway Recovery Group is a voluntary organisation, helping to restore derelict canals in Britain. They run weekend working parties and week-long work camps every year.

British Waterways British Waterways

British Waterways is a public corporation sponsored by DEFRA in England and Wales and the Scottish Executive in Scotland. BW manages 2,000 miles (3,219km) of canals and rivers in the UK.

Nick's Canal Route Planner. This site lets you plan routes around the UK canal system, calculate distances, and see information on places along the way. You can print out your route to take with you.

The London Canal Museum London Canal Museum

The museum at King's Cross shows (amongst other things) a narrowboat cabin, the history of London's canals, the cargoes carried, the people who lived and worked on the waterways, and the horses that pulled their boats.

Virtual Waterways Online Catalogue

Hundreds of years of waterways history brought together in an archive covering all aspects of the creation, ownership, maintenance and use of Britain's inland waterways.

Small Ships Register Small Ships Register

The Small Ships Register (SSR) is administered by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). The SSR enables you to register ownership of a boat which is less than 24 metres (79 feet) long.

Save Our Waterways

A new site designed to motivate the campaign against DEFRA's funding cuts. The website provides for all waterways users (boaters, walkers, cyclists, anglers) and those who live or work beside the waterways.

An irreverent look at the waterways. Describes itself as "Canals and waterways from a perspective of chocolate buttons". Some nice pictures and good links. Topical and fun to read.

National Canal Museum National Canal Museum

The Museum in Easton, Pennsylvania, USA, focuses on America's historic canals. Exhibits show what life was like on board a canal boat, the impact canals had on industry, and the technological advances they generated.

The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust

All about the Kennet and Avon Canal, the broad canal/river navigation that runs from Reading to Hanham Lock (near Bristol) including the Caen Hill flight of 29 locks - the longest flight of broad locks in UK.

The Foxton Inclined Plane Trust

News and information about the historic Foxton Inclined Plane Boat Lift (on the Grand Union Canal Leicester Arm) and the voluntary organisation dedicated to its restoration to full working order.

Save the Port of Berkhamsted

A group of Berkhamsted residents, waterways enthusiasts and historians campaigning to save the last working wharf in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. There has been a boatyard on this site since 1799.
